Mr Nakhla and his team were fantastic from start to finish . Together we explored all my options eventually leading to a much needed total hip replacement . Everything went so well , the theatre staff were so kind and informative as to what they were going to do pre op . I was up the same day as my surgery , was due to go home same day but unfortunately due to staffing , I wasn’t able . Mr Nakhla came onto the ward and apologised for me having to stay in . How kind was that ? Saw him in clinic for my 6 week check and everything is fabulous , first time in 3 years I have had no hip pain on my right side . I could not have asked for or wished for a better consultant and I do not say that as a jpuh staff member but as a patient who waited on the nhs list the same as everyone else .

I cannot praise Mr Nakhla highly enough for the treatment I have received from him. I had been suffering from accute pains caused by Osteoarthritis in my right hip for a few years and was referred to Mr Nakhla in 2020. He advised me that the solution to my problem was a total hip replacement and in April 2021 I was placed on the waiting list. I was told that there could be a 14 month wait before the operation could be performed. With the backlog of NHS operations growing I was not confident that the operation would be done within 14 months! How wrong was I. I received a phone call from Mr Nakhla's secretary in March 2022 asking if I was available for the operation to be done on April 1st, just a couple of weeks from then. I was advised I would not have to stay in hospital and that I would be going home the same day. I did make sure this wasn't and April Fool's joke!! I attended the preoperation assessment and was seen by Mr Nakhla, the physiotherapist and other members of his team. He assured me that if all went well I could be out the same day. On Friday 1st April 2022 I arrived at the hospital at 06:30hrs. By 08:30 I was in the preparation room having a spinal anaesthetic. I was not given a general anaesthetic but was sedated. At 11:00hrs the operation was complete and I was back in the ward. It didn't take long before I was out of bed walking with a frame. Short rest and then out of bed on crutches. Light lunch followed by the staircase and doorsteps. Within 3 hours of having the new hip I was told that I would be discharged later that day! Friends of mine turned up with a hospital wheelchair at 21:00 and by 22:00 I was home climbing my own stairs to go to bed!! Wow! Who could have guessed it would all be done so quickly. My recovery since has also moved on a pace and within 4 weeks of having the surgery I was doing a 3 mile walk with my dogs. I am no longer in pain and I can honestly say my life and fitness has improved to a level that I last had over 4 years ago! I have now been signed off and will go back next April to have X-Rays done to review my recovery.

I cannot praise Mr NAKHLA more highly. Having first consulted with him in the autumn of 2020 with my osteoarthritic hip causing me considerable discomfort he recommended the longer term best option was a total hip replacement. I was placed on a waiting list with an approximate waiting time of 14 months. Out of the blue two weeks ago I was contacted by his secretary offering my new hip on Friday 1st April 2022. She assured me it was not an April Fool’s joke. Within the next two weeks I completed the necessary pre admission assessment and Covid test. At 06:30 Friday 1/4/22 I presented myself to ward 22 at James Paget. What brilliant care and treatment I received. I was wheeled into theatre about 08:30 and was back on the ward by 11:00. Job done!! The rest of the afternoon was taken up with periods of physio and rest. I completed the series of exercises which included starting off with a frame, progressing to two crutches. I continued with steps, door thresholds and finally ascending and declining a staircase safely. With that completed I was told that I would be discharged at 21:00hrs. The worst part of the day was possibly watching the hands of the clock slowly progress to the zero hour. It duly came and with my medications dispensed and the paperwork completed I left the hospital arriving home shortly after 22:00hrs. I thank Mr NAKHLA and the wonderful staff who tended to me throughout the day.
